3D Film Is Back And It is Better Than You Remember

By Natalie R. Retana

The 3D film has been a part of the American movie industry since the early middle of the twentieth century in one form or another. In fact, in the 1950's it was a surprisingly popular form of film presentation, though it was very expensive to produce at the time. At the time this form of filming was mostly relegated to cheap niche films that required expensive special effects to keep fans entertained, few of the 3D films of the 1950's went down in cinematic history. The combination of low budget films and expensive equipment took its toll on the industry. Film makers weren't getting what they wanted out of the expensive to budget films and eventually they dropped into oblivion.

Thirty years later the 3D film made a slow but steady comeback. The 1980s were a time of excess and campy was back in, helping to bring about a resurgence of interest in all things 3D, though they were still rather expensive to produce. At the turn of the twenty-first century rapidly improving technology made it cheaper and easier than ever to create this film genre. Yet again, trendiness brought new life to the 3D film, but this time with more success than anyone could have imagined.

These films made their comeback slow and steady through children's films and IMAX showings. Horror, science fiction, and even several other genres were quick to follow- wanting to bring the fun into the adult world. One of the most amazing hits, that helped to really inspire the comeback, was 2009's Avatar. The unprecedented success of Avatar left filmmakers in every genre looking for ways to bring 3D into their own productions. Around the same time production started on 3D televisions so we could bring the technology home with us.

Though this kind of film production has been in existence for over five decades, the science that goes into it has been expanding for over a hundred years. A savvy film maker of the 1890's named William Friese-Greene first came up with a way to create this type of film experience. Movie players and video game systems have been updated with 3D capabilities to be displayed on the various 3D TV sets now on the market. Even home recording devices allow families to make their very own 3D film.

Hit films like Alice in Wonderland, Tron Legacy, Toy Story 3D, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows continue to bring the 3D movie to a whole new generation. The reborn interest in 3D film is expected to continue to develop into more and more realistic film experiences for spectators as time goes on.
