Independent music today

By Scott Walker

The 1990s gave way to an exciting time of fresh independent and alternative bands. Probably the most notable is Kurt Cobain of nirvana. This was a watershed time where alternative rock and independent music was making its way into the popular charts. There are many new popular bands today trying to top alternative rock stars and bands like Soundgarden and Kurt Cobain's nirvana. Will these bands be around in the next decade? Many of the classic alternative bands have stood the test of time. These bands are still seen in record shops, tee shirt shops, fan magazines and active within the social media websites.Probably the best way now to find new musical ideas that are independent of the bland tastes of major record companies is the Internet. Go into social media websites like facebook and search for alternative music.

There was a time when 'alternative music' actually meant something. You always had your mainstream chart music, consisting of the usual mixture of cheesy, commercial tunes and a smattering of a few quality pop songs. Then there was always the 'alternative scene', consisting of bands, usually signed to independent labels who were doing something a bit more adventurous. In the 60s, alternative music could have referred to psychedelic rock, in the 70s to glam, in the 80s to German industrial funk, in the 90s to techno, and so on. It was never that difficult to locate 'alternative music'. All you had to do was walk into an independent record shop and start rummaging through the albums. Or even tune into certain 'hip' radio programs- the John Peel Show on BBC Radio One being one fine example. Such shows no longer exist and although independent record-shops still proliferate, they tend to sell the vast catalogs of vintage releases which still remain popular enough with the public.

From the very beginning of popular music to the present computer generation there are notable differences in how music is marketed. In the present alternative music is so swamped with record companies and bands using the term "alternative music" there is no telling what the music is really all about or if it alternative music at all? with the advert of social media sites for music promotional stratagems like myspace and facebook many bands just label the music alternative for attention. if you spent days searching the internet for alternative bands you would come across hundreds or thousands in the category. Many music styles that would be categorized as retrograde or sounding like music of the past is now considered a form of alternative music.

Newer artists like the Flaming Lips are one of the few bands still carrying a banner of originality and wild stage performances. Some of the music they play draws on the past yet is produced in an over the top modern manner. Since their beginnings as a 1990s grunge band their prominence came about by exploring softer almost Beach Boys production and song writing twist set to an alternative music style they can call their own. In the arena of modern breakout artists Lady Gaga makes a name associated with outlandish outfits inspired by Jobriath, David Bowie and New Romantic 80s but the music is strictly Madonna type dance music.

Looking at the glass half full their is still great hope for new bands and people seeking new alternative music. the internet indeed has created a situation where kids sit and listen to MP3s all day however. The proliferation of live concerts and rising prices in tickets for live performances may be a direct result of the eventual boredom of just staring at youtube videos of new alternative bands or listening to alternative music on the ipod. As CDs sales have dropped to nothing live shows by bands has become a huge money making strategy to get revenue for new and different alternative music bands. There are millions of teenagers and young adults who are tired of the computer monitor as their only musical experience live music and cool shows by local alternative bands can shake a new awakening in the hearts of fans and within themselves as they search for new alternative music.
