Tips for Wedding Photography on the Beach

By Natascha Gilles

Beach weddings are a joy to photograph, especially if it's at a luxury resort with a beautiful beach front. Add little details like flower petals on the sand, elegantly landscaped walkways, breathtaking turquoise ocean water as a backdrop, and you've got a recipe for a very photogenic wedding!

The best form of outdoor light for any beach front wedding ceremony is usually gentle overcast light. This assures there isn't any harsh dark areas cast on the faces of the people you are photographing. If tough sunshine is inevitable, aim to have the sunshine at the rear of the folks you are shooting. Otherwise you will end up getting images of individuals squinting! If possible, place the major ceremony in a shaded place, which could do wonders for the comfort and ease of the visitors, specifically in moist tropical climates. If you are lucky enough to obtain a beach with aqua blue blue water, apply it in your favor. Feature the ocean prominently even in photos of folks, which would be a powerful way to provide context for the photos.

When night time falls, the challenge is always to light the actual wedding celebration correctly with out turning to the usage of direct flash. Placing off-camera speed lights on lightstands tactically mounted throughout the location might greatly help to increase the light levels. These lights would sometimes work as a key light, as well as provide some kind of rim lighting. If the place already provides several lamp posts, use them as part of your lighting strategy.

All these light sources combined would still not be able to give you sufficient light in an outdoor reception at night, as there are no surfaces from which to bounce from, typical of a beach reception. Having a canopy would greatly help to provide a bounce surface, resulting in softer light on the faces of people, not to mention a good way to stave off a light drizzle.

Study these tips and try them out before the actual wedding day. That way you will be prepared when you shoot the actual wedding ceremony.
