Adventure Films From The 90s Which Changed Today's Special Effects Industry

By Arthur Andrews

When it comes to action films, the 1990s was a revolutionary decade. It was the start of computer generated effects becoming commonplace in films. We saw some pretty new stuff on the screen, and Toy Story was a game changer for animation, but we will not focus on Pixar cartoons.

The following are what I consider to be the best action movies from 1990 to 1999.

James Cameron made some serious cash in the 90s with Terminator 2:Judgement Day. This movie still holds up the "wow" test. Basically what that means is you can put this movie on today and still be wowed by the effects.

True Lies, also directed by James Cameron was another epic action movie. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a secret agent and Jamie Lee Curtis as the oblivious wife, this movie personifies 1990s action. Explosions, helicopters, airplanes oh my.

Ironically, a film that spoofed all the action movies of the 90s ended up being one of my favorites. Of course, I am talking about Hot Shots: Part Deux. I have incredibly fond memories of this film and any time it is on (which is very rare), I feel the need to watch it.

When it comes to watching a 90s action flick with my buddies from high school, there is no movie we would rather watch than The Rock. Everything about this movie is awesome. I am not always a fan of Michael Bay's work but he delivered with this one.

One other fantastic action film, also starring Cage, is Con Air. Nicholas Cage stars as Cameron Powe, a wrongfully accused ex-marine who is almost free to get back to his wife (played by Monica Potter) and his daughter who has never even met. All he has to do first is get through Steve Buscemi and John Malkovich, which is harder than it sounds.

These are at the top of the list, but there are so many others from this decade that are worthy of praise in another article.
