'The Rite' Movie Review

By Mike Stack

New Line Cinema released a new horror/thriller movie titled "The Rite" into theaters. I just got done checking it out,and it was very good. It featured a lot of intense exorcism scenes with acting legend Anthony Hopkins. The film stars: Anthony Hopkins, Colin O'Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, and Rutger Hauer.

The movie revolved around Michael Kovak and Father Lucas Trevant. Michael is a beginning Priest who has issues with his faith. He has trouble believing that the Devil exist as well as so-called Demonic possessions. The movie shows a lot of flashbacks to Michael's childhood where he first developed his faith issues when his father died.

Michael travels to Italy to learn more about exorcism from Father Lucas because his teacher in America thought he needed to gain some real experience with exorcism since he doubted it a lot. In just a few minutes after arriving at Lucas' house,Michael gets introduced to his first live exorcism with a girl who is pregnant and experiences frequent possessions.

Even after Michael sees a ton of convincing evidence of possession,he still feels doubt for the faith. The possessed girl spits out nails, blood, her voice gets crazy deep, her body contorts, along with other kinds of weird stuff, but Michael still swears she just needs to see a psychiatrist for this issue.

Michael ends up dealing with major issues that are brought on by strange dreams he's been having about his dead father. Lucas tries to help him out with his issues. However, Michael gets his doubting faith put to the maximum test when the demon possesses someone he never thought it would, and if Michael doesn't get some faith quick, his life and other's lives are in great danger.

Michael and his girlfriend are standing in the room while the possession is going on,and things get very rough. Michael gets put in a very dangerous position, and has to deal with his faith issues and problems with God to overcome what is getting ready to destroy him. The conclusion was very intense and kept me on the edge of my seat.

The flick was extremely entertaining and interesting. However, there were some slow times during the film, and I found myself dosing off for a little while, but things did pick up in a major way. It delivered a lot of "can't miss," emotional moments. The exorcism scenes were amazingly disturbing and convincing. I gave the flick a strong B rating.
