an explanation of acting talent agencies

By Eva Black

Maybe you're one of those people who doesn't crave the sameness of the nine-to-five office job. Maybe you want to make sure your talents are recognized and that you have an opportunity to use them. Maybe you have the kind of face that can warm America's heart, or sell it good soap. In short, maybe you should think about trying your hand at modeling or acting.

The talent industry is full to bursting with job opportunities for someone who is charming, hardworking, willing to spend time at their craft. But it's not always easy to know where to turn in this big industry. This is why you'll want to find a good talent agency early on. The agency is who helps you get organized: getting your composites made, setting up auditions, making sure you get out there. You'll want to do your homework and find a reputable, honest agency. Many of them are out for your money and nothing else.

Making Friends

There are a few key things to seek out when you're shopping for your talent agency. It can't be stressed how important it is to find an honest one. The agency needs to be fully licensed; it should have a list of clients who you recognize; the agency should also have been working in the industry long enough to have made a name for itself, for better or worse -- so do your homework.

Once you've got an agency, you'll want to get composites made. Composites are the photo collection cards you carry into auditions, and that agencies use to shop you around -- they're your business cards, essentially. Photographers can help you get these made; many talent agencies can take care of this too.

Finding a Fit

As mentioned above, there are nearly endless opportunities in the talent world. You could try your hand at hand modeling, you could go forth and find your way into magazine ads, radio spots, commercials. On the other hand, maybe you want to seek your glory in entertainment, in which case there are television shows filming in many cities, as well as films of major and minor budgets. If your attention span doesn't warrant this kind of time investment, perhaps you could dodge pyrotechnics in a music video. It's an open field once you learn how to play.

Even if you don't have exotic looks, you might be just right. Talent agencies are looking for people with all kinds of looks to fit all kinds of jobs. Your job is to be responsible and dedicated and charming and do what comes natural when the camera rolls.
