Horror movies offer many different types for you to watch, and know what they are can help you chose the next film you want to see. Not all of them offer gore and blood and there are many different sub genres that you can enjoy.

The most classic of types is the slasher film. These typically have a masked antagonist that is either seen from the beginning or left for you to guess their identity. The victims are often killed an increasingly gruesome manner and usually one is left alive at the end of the film. This allows for sequels to be created, and some of the most successful have been going on for many years in a franchise.

Some use psychology to create suspense. This type does not always have as much blood as the others and uses suspense to create a feeling of unease and mystery through the film to the climax. These are made to keep the feeling up during the whole film and many times uses plot twists to keep you unsure as to who the killer is and what the motives are.

Torture, or exploitation films are extremely graphic in the violence they depict. These are typically the most gory of all the types and are not as scary as they are shocking. These are controversy all due to the graphic nature as well as the sexualization and romanticizing of the action on the screen which makes them more taboo in nature and less socially acceptable.

Monster films, or creature features, take a being from the movies like a vampire or werewolf and center the film around them. They can be dark humor or serious films, and usually culminate in the monster being killed or otherwise controlled in some way.

Zombie films are similar to the monster type, but they have their own rules that followed through the film. These have become more popular in recent times and have a high following of fans for each type of film. These are are either exceptionally dark or incredibly funny but they all deal with the threat of the living dead and surviving the onslaught of it with your brains intact.

Paranormal films deal with ghosts and other things that cannot be seen. Many of these rarely show the object of terror, instead relying on the idea or the effects that they cause. It can include ghosts, phenomena and magic as a method of creating the suspense and many of these are effective with what they don't show versus what they do.
