How Fashion is Influenced by Famous Musicians

By Shannon Holland

One of the greatest influences on fashion - ever - is music. Music stars from bands to solo artists have influenced a range of trends and caused a mass of inspiration to designers; some music stars have changed fashion forever and their influence (thanks to the help of creative designers) has never faded from the fashion world.

The first and most amazing fashion trend ever set by music stars is the Sex Pistols. They were, of course, helped along by Dame Vivienne Westwood, but their influence on fashion is still alive and kicking. The Sex Pistols not only started a mass culture of punk, rebellion and anarchy but dented the fashion world with military jackets, studs, rips and pins. Today you probably see a more refined punk look but the true style of punk has left its mark on fashion today - most edgy and controversial looks have probably already been done by Viv and her Sex Pistols.

The Spice Girls pushed the UK fashion scene into Union Jack t-shirts and mini shirts in their prime time. Victoria Beckham is still a regular on the fashion scene despite the fact that the band no longer exists. David Bowie also brought the glitz and glamour trend into success, along with his weird and wonderful stage costumes which took to all our hearts.

The 90s brought along the influential grunge era pioneered by rockers such as the late Kurt Cobain. Although many see this as a 'teenage' fashion sense the grunge look of khaki and hardcore feel is something that can be pinned to most designs today. Madonna was also one of the women music stars who brought female fashion into the light with her rebellious attitude and edgy personality and looks.

The modern music scene and the latest music stars still retain their influence on fashion. JLS as the most recent band to take this role, bring the metro sexual men of the world out and influencing the manly styles of knitted scarves and tight shirts. The fashion world is still held hostage by music - but both industry wouldn't be here today without each other!
