Taking Electric Guitar Lessons

By Mike Bordon

If you are completely new to the idea of playing an electric guitar then the internet can be your best friend because you are sure to find it flooded with loads of instructional videos, e-books, and other resources which claim to teach how to play the electric guitar. You might want to look for a program which tackles the basic, intermediate and advanced techniques separately because it might be a little difficult to pick up at first.

It is a rule of the learning process that whenever an individual wishes to learn something new, he should start from scratch and then proceed upwards in progressive stages. While learning the electric guitar this first rung of the ladder comprises of knowledge pertaining to the eleven parts of the guitar of which the headstock, the neck, the fret board and the body represent the physical dimensions while the tuners, the pick-ups and their switch, the bridge tremolo and the control knobs are accessories in the production of music.

Another basic concept which is taught at the beginning of the electric guitar lessons is the stance which one can take while playing. The two universal norms in this regard are the sitting and standing positions with the right hand resting over the bridge of the guitar and the left hand supporting the neck. While sitting one can make use of the casual and classical styles of holding and while standing the most comfortable way would be to place the strap over one's shoulder and adjust it to place the instrument around the middle of the body.

While holding the electric guitar the player must be careful about the positions of his hands and always ensure that the hands are relaxed so as to prevent any kind of strain or injury. It is also very important for a player to avoid long finger nails and settle for short finger nails which ensure that each note on the strings rings true and clear. A beginner would find that his fingers hurt and are painful when he first starts learning to play the guitar. This is natural and normal and it is just a matter of weeks before it is a thing of the past.

Like in studies the learning process during the electric guitar lessons is more effective when a lengthy and difficult chapter is broken down into smaller tasks so that each portion is tackled and perfected individually. This not only facilitates understanding and long term retention but makes the long and arduous task of mastering the A and D chords seem simple and easy.

Once the basics such as adjusting the volume knobs, tone knobs, pick ups, fretting and so on are mastered, the next step entails tuning your own guitar, changing the strings as well as checking the intonation of your electric guitar confidently. You would also be knowledgeable enough to discuss your guitar set up with your local music store attendant and select new parts of the electric guitar in order to produce better quality sounds.

The essential pre-requisite for a beginner to reach the great heights of being a professional are the right guidance, patience and practice. It is very necessary to take time to patiently master the skills at each level before moving on to the next level and soon one will be able to play beautiful melodies on the electric guitar.
