The Role Of Gold In Movies

By Jack Wogan

Movies are reflections of our deepest desires, dreams or beliefs just like stories. One of the most irresistible attractions, gold, often appear in them contributing to their success. Some movies illustrate the way this precious metal destroys lives, other times they help us understand the ancient worship it received as a pure, divine metal, and other times they show how it can make people happier or spice their boring or miserable lives.

With the discovery of the New World many new legends have appeared. The one about an entire city made of gold haunted explorers for several years. This story is brought to life for children and for those with childlike souls in "The road to El Dorado". Contrary to our normal expectations, the heroes are not brave and bright explorers; instead they are two best friends, gifted with a good sense of humor, who make the trip to the City of Gold somehow accidentally, driven by a chain of events. They are revealed a civilization combining successfully features of ancient American cultures with the glamor of the immortal metal.

A smaller amount of precious metal is found in the movie named after pyrite, the mineral often mistaken for gold. "Fool's gold" is a funny treasure hunt, evolving around a divorced couple with a shared passion for discovering lost precious items. As clues begin to show the location of the sunken ship, the two rediscover their love, while the other characters help or cross them in their search for old swords and jewels.

Pirate stories and movies are always associated with gold. The series "Pirates of the Caribbean" begins with a movie about it. The crew of the Black Pearl is under an ancient curse, drawn to them by their stealing Aztec gold. Their desire to escape from it triggers the entire action. This story is a good example of how the fascination for gold is often seen as an evil temptation, punished accordingly by unnatural forces.

They say that money don't bring happiness; but the question remains: why are people so attracted to them? Having a small fortune helps you sleep sound even in times when economy knows ups and downs. Buying gold means having a valuable trade instrument even in the worst case scenario.
