Movie Review Of Despicable Me

By Jonathan Harris

As the title states Despicable Me is a 3-D cartoon movie that shows the value and importance of family and loving relationships through the story of an evil villain who starts off as a rather terrible person but begins to transform through the power of people. In this rather comedic story, a super villain named Gru learns of the stealing of the Pyramids of Giza. Perfectly aware of the fact that this was probably executed by one of his evil colleagues, in order to get that extra edge he resolves to steal the moon. How could anyone do better than that? In order to see this plan through however, he needs to get a loan from the Bank of Evil. When he is refused, he is required to fulfill certain obligations in order to get the loan. What else goes wrong? Well, the villain also adopts three girls and as he goes about his plan he starts to realize that maybe his goals aren't all they're cracked up to be.

-Good And Bad

There are plenty of good things to say about this movie. The plot concept is definitely one to look into very closely when talking things over. In reality it was really quite smart the way the anti-hero plot device was put to use here. This villain exists to make things difficult for other people, but the viewers can sympathize with him because he finds himself in situations that most people are familiar with. Losing out to a younger colleague, attempting to take out a loan, looking for approval from parents, and trying to get things done while kids are playing games and being loud.

Although Gru is more an anti-hero than a villain, his struggles are things people can understand. This movie does an excellent job of demonstrating the value of having people and healthy relationships as it makes a villain into a better person for it.

-Development As A Character

This is a cartoon so you can't expect profound and developed characters, but this movie does a nice of job of promoting growth in the characters viewers see the most of. Gru is changed from a villain into a caring father to these orphan girls, you see more of the background in his relationship with his mother, and there's also the evolution of the girls themselves to enjoy.

It is also worth noting that Vector and Perkins although lacking in the way of character development, have that devoted father-son type of relationship which is interesting to look at when contrasted with that of Gru and his mother.

This movie is not made for artistic purposes really. But if you are interested in finding a fun way to pass the evening or take your children out for some fun, Despicable Me is an excellent film you can take the whole family to see. People can relate very easily to the things that happen and you will have a good laugh while you appreciate the value of being accepted and loved by other people. The plot is engaging, the acting is quite good. The popularity of this movie isn't taking place without cause. Check it out for yourself.
