Learning the Ropes

By Allen Henderson

Perhaps you have no desire to work a desk job. Perhaps you have some pretty impressive talents and you think the world should benefit from the sharing of said talents. Perhaps your face is just right to star in a movie, or to sell America what it most wants. In other words, maybe the life you're looking for is in modeling or acting.

There are many, many opportunities in the talent industry for a motivated, driven, responsible individual. But you've got to know how to navigate the often-treacherous waters of the industry in order to avoid sinking. To do that, you'll want to find a good talent agency. These are the people who help you get your composites made and shop you around to various casting directors. It's important that you find an agency that is good, and honest. A lot of them are just looking to get your money.

Finding Your Agency

There are a few tips when it comes to looking for your future talent agency. This is an important relationship, so take the search seriously. Make sure the agency is fully licensed; make sure it has a client list with names you recognize; make sure it has been working in the industry for long enough to have established some credibility.

It's important to have your composites made early on. Composites are the collected shots of you in action and in poses that you take to casting calls -- basically your business cards. Photographers can help you put these together; talent agencies often can as well.

Finding Your Future

As mentioned above, there are nearly endless opportunities in the talent world. You could try your hand at hand modeling, you could go forth and find your way into magazine ads, radio spots, commercials. On the other hand, maybe you want to seek your glory in entertainment, in which case there are television shows filming in many cities, as well as films of major and minor budgets. If your attention span doesn't warrant this kind of time investment, perhaps you could dodge pyrotechnics in a music video. It's an open field once you learn how to play.

And even if you don't think you're the right kind of exotic person for this industry, don't worry. Talent agencies are always seeking people of all kinds of looks to fit the need for all kinds of work. As for you, remember to work hard, remain dedicated, be charming, and get ready for when all eyes are suddenly on you.
