"Rock Dust Light Star" - Funky groove with Horns

By Triggers Dave

Jamiroquai were formed in 1992 by singer Jay Kay. Initially they were the most important component in the London's 1990 acid jazz movement. The following albums have explored other musical directions such as pop, rock and electronica and dance. Front man is singer Jay Kay, who is the only remaining original member (and creator of the bands Buffalo Man logo) of the band that sold over 25 million albums worldwide.

The band had four No.1 albums in the UK, the first was "Emergency on Planet Earth" (1993). "The Return of the Space Cowboy" (1994) hit No.2, as did their American breakthrough "Travelling Without Moving" (1996). "Virtual Insanity" became their biggest UK hit yet (reaching No.3), and featured a video that brought international acclaim - at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards it received ten nominations, winning four awards. Jamiroquai have had 13 nominations for the Brit Awards - and have won none.

Jamiroquai had their first and only UK No.1, "Deeper Underground" in 1998. "Synkronized" (1999) topped the UK charts and featured two hit singles. "A Funk Odyssey" (2001) also reached the top spot of the album charts, their latest hit was "Feels Just Like it Should", from "Dynamite" (2005).

On 1 September 2010, Jamiroquai performed the first song from "Rock Dust Light Star"on The Chris Moyles Show, the single "White Knuckle Ride". It was very well received by critics and praised for bringing funk back. "Rock Dust Light Star" has been written entirely by the band and brings to light a different side to Jay Kay's voice and singing, he is following the trend from rapping to more singing.

The band with the Buffalo Man logo set off on their first tour in five years promoting their seventh long player (not counting "High Times: Singles 1992-2006"), "Rock Dust Light Star". The new album is groovy and tight, which the past three weren't, it's more consistent and it exceeded expectations of fans and critics. Instead of the new direction that was originally intended, the album's sound is more electronic than anything else they had ever done. Jamiroquai will tour the UK and Europe in March and April 2011.
