Loving Little Dog Lost

By James Pynn

Many of you will have no idea what I'm talking about when I mention the Wonderful World of Disney Sunday Night Special. This hearkens back to a time when you essentially had 10 or 13 channels to choose from and none of them broadcast for twenty-four hours. You had to stand and change the channel manually and if anything from Disney was broadcast, you paid attention. This was when the television movie was a big deal and drive-ins all the rage.

Now, one of the biggest Disney movie deals, for me and my family at least, was Little Dog Lost. I know that may not stir you to blink away tears or remembrance, but the film was a lighter, less dramatic take on the success of Lassie and Old Yeller. Remember, you couldn't get into anything too heavy during the Fifties and Sixties. So, keep this flick in perspective.

For fans of Milo and Otis -- or any animal gets lost and returns home film -- this is all familiar territory. Candy, a Welsh Corgi, gets lost, gets into adventures, finds his family, and then has an existential moment of regret. I know I may be interpreting that last bit, but poor Candy does exhibit signs of regret. Once a dog has fended off a bear, what good can come from hanging around the house?

While the family is supposed to be your basic, cookie-cutter Fifties nuclear family, there seems to be a darker side. You see, Candy runs away and gets lost because poor Candy has come to associate the broom with utter doom. The family uses the broom to shew him away and ultimately, he runs for his life one day.

This underrated classic is now available on DVD, after having been buried in a Disney vault for decades. I, for one, am glad to have it on the shelf. Of course, I'm a bit compulsive when it comes to keeping Disney films on the shelf. If you're interested in a family-friendly flick, give this one a go and let me know what you think.
