Your Portfolio: Give it your Best Shot

By Adrian Fowler

A model composite sheet is probably the most valuable tool when looking for work. Therefore, get serious when considering your composite or risk missing out on well-paid jobs after failing to make an impact on potential employers.

Serving as a resume that reveals a model's style and ability to agencies, your composite sheet must consist of high-quality photographs to increase your chances of being hired and therefore successful -- and this is particularly important if you're hoping to prolong a flourishing career in glamour modeling.

Just like an office worker, your resume is crucial to getting the jobs you want by presenting a unique and flexible image of you, so be prepared to get stuck into some serious research to unearth a photographer that best suits your requirements. Thus, your finished composite must comprise photos of you sporting a collection of clothes, being captured in a number of poses, maintaining plentiful expressions, and being made up to emphasize those distinctions and enhance your adaptability as a model. If done correctly, your greatest features should be captured to great effect, too.

As said above, you must locate a first-rate photographer, so get checking local newspapers and magazines, conducting searches online for recommendations, and quizzing your modeling agency for possible candidates. Some agencies have in-house photographers, but always do your homework and make sure you're not getting taken advantage of by the people taking the pictures. Keep an eye on your wallet. Once you find a photographer that matches your requirements, visit their studio to ask about prices, how long before your photographs are available and, very importantly, which formats you want them in. Also, take the opportunity to stipulate the conditions of the shoot in relation to your schedule. However, before settling on one particular photographer, insist on viewing samples of their work so you can decide if they're up to the task of fulfilling your composite needs.

Once you have chosen, though, instruct the photographer as to what looks you want to achieve, but also ask for headshots as well as full-body images. Obviously, as he or she is a professional, listen intently to suggestions for expressions and poses.

It's not just an excellent photographer you need to complete a successful shoot, but also top-quality stylists and make-up artists. Again, some research is required. You'll need sexier outfits if you've chosen to be a glamor model, while get hold of more restrained styles for fashion and commercial. A model must be comfortable in any number of clothes, so wear a wide variety and experiment with lots of poses. Again, listen carefully to instructions and ideas from your photographer, make-up artist and stylist. You might be a rookie, so it's not just a dazzling composite you're creating, but gaining vital experience to help for when your first assignment arrives.

Now you must select the best photographs to include in your composite. In essence, it is better to have five wonderful shots than 25 mediocre ones, so be very discriminating. Hopefully the photographer, through good use of personal skills and interesting lighting and backdrops, will have put you at ease as signs of nerves shine through and will hinder your hopes of being hired.

There are no guarantees in modeling, but if you take care of compiling your composite you are well on the way to a long and successful career.
