Modeling and Talent Agencies: How to Avoid Being Scammed

By Susan Hughes

Everybody wants to be famous. And to get this dream, a lot of people will do anything, including paying their way to get a role, or to win a contest. Because of this, there are also many people who want to take advantage of the needs of those who want to become models, or actors, or singers. This article gives you tips on how to keep yourself away from situations such as being scammed by a fake talent agency. Before all of that, as they say, everything starts with the self. Do you think you are capable of becoming a model or actor?

Legitimate talent agencies require no registration fee just to have an appointment with you. If you have what it takes, and you have the talent, they will sign you without you having to pay for it. However it's your responsibility to put your tools together.

There is a big difference between a modeling class and a talent agency. Modeling classes get their profits from students, while talent agencies get their profits from getting you work. The talent agencies are there to sponsor and promote you as a part of their future talents.

Maintain awareness at all times; paying attention is to your advantage. Read contracts carefully, especially the fine print, because sometimes, fake or fly-by-night modeling agencies will try to scam you through these papers. Make sure you read the contract thoroughly. Check out their website if they have one, and do your homework on the authenticity of a talent agency.

Of course, scammers can be very tricky when it comes to promotion. They too, are capable of creating a website just to get some money from you. Ask colleagues; ask your mentors if the company is legit. Someone with some experience will know a lot better than someone who's just started out as a model or actor.

For someone who is just starting in the modeling or entertainment agency, one idea is to enroll in an acting and modeling school. Not only will this make you become more experienced, but it will also give you credibility. However, be careful of scam talent agencies who will ask money for useless trainings and workshops. Scammers will also try to get into your pockets by asking for airfare going to, for example, New York, so beware.

Making it will always be hard work. If you are prepared for that, are flexible with your schedule, have the right attitude, then you can do it.

Remember that the road to fame and fortune is not easy. If you watch reality shows like America's Next Top Model, you are aware of the difficult situations and challenges that the contestants have to go through. Greasing your way to what you think is the easier path by paying people will not give you the right kind of satisfaction that is felt when you actually worked hard to reach your dream; it may just leave you broke.
